2022 End of the Year Report
The services we provided in 2022 included onsite and remote interpreting, video captioning, employment services, transitional services, community navigation services, ASL community education & training.
Deaf Awareness Week 2022:
DAS partnered with SMSD to celebrate the first ever flag raising ceremony at the Rath building which is the Erie County Building. The County recognized the Deaf organizations by flying the Blue & Yellow Global Flag for Deaf Communities.
Also, during the week:
- We partnered with the Niagara Aquarium, where there was an onsite interpreter to interpret the Sea lion and penguin presentation.
- BCAD- Buffalo Civic Association of the Deaf hosted a Silo City Tour event and that had 20 deaf community members participating in this tour learning about the Silo City in Buffalo.
- We raised over $500.00 for our following events during Deaf Awareness week- PJ Cools Ice Cream Social, Buffalo Bison’s Deaf Awareness Day and Thin Man Brewery Happy Hour!
Interpreting Services: (Need to update)
Number of consumers we interpreted for: 611
Total Onsite and Scheduled Remote Interpreting: 7,092 appointments in 2022 compared to 5135 Scheduled Assignments in 2021.
Total Hours of Interpreting Completed: Approximately 16,800+ hours
Total Hours of CART Servies Provided: Approximately 42.5 hours
Total Hours for third party platform usage (Zoom, Microsoft Teams and more): Approximately 800+ hours
Total Hours for VRI: Approximately: 170+ hours
Served over 400 different businesses, organizations, and service providers with interpreting services.
We had 142 new Customers in 2022 compared to 125 new customers in 2021.
Fundraising and Donations:
In 2022, we had a few fundraisers that we had hosted throughout the year. The BBQ Chicken Dinner at People Inc’s North Forest Location, Giving Tuesday, Deaf Awareness Week Donations and Fundraiser. As well as donations throughout the year. We are thankful to be able to raise over $9,000.00 in community support.
ASL Education:
Providing ASL classes for Grade 1 and Grade 2 students weekly = 108 students
Community Education – We ran remote classes for the Winter, Spring and Fall = 91 students, which is an increase from last year’s number of 74 students.
Hosted several Community Ed. Class with a few schools and organizations
Total students reached: 43 students
People Inc. – 8 students
We had 6 Deaf teachers being able to be a part of the team. Totaling approximately 500 hours of instruction.
Employment Services/Community Service Navigation Report:
It has been a busy year within the Community and Employment Services. The Total hours of Employment services 230 hours and Community Services 159 hours, provided in person. This does not include the phone calls in advocacy and employment providers contact, client contacts. Also, countless internal and external meetings, training and collaborations in the community.

Supported various agencies across WNY to provide Deaf Cultural Competency training to their staff including:

Erie County Senior Services
Mount Saint Mary’s High School
Western New York Independent Living
Aquarium of Niagara
Excelsior Orthopedics
New Partnerships:
Buffalo Sabres/Buffalo Bandits: They now provide game captioning at the arena. They are in the four corner Ribbon area.
Aquarium of Niagara: They have been very interested in making the Aquarium accessible for all. There are more interesting projects to come for the year 2023.
