Working as an Interpreter for DAS

Working as an interpreter for DAS

To work as an interpreter for Deaf Adult Services you must either present a copy of your Certification from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID), or pass an in-office skills and knowledge assessment evaluation also known as minimum competency screening process.

Click here for more information on the evaluation process for working as a pre-certified interpreter for Deaf Adult Services.

The in-office skills and knowledge assessment is given in 2 parts:

1. The Minimum Competency Screening Process (MCSP). This is a written test developed by the New York State Education Department Office of Vocational and Educational Services for Individuals with Disabilities (VESID). The MCSP, consisting of 30 Multiple Choice Questions, 15 True or False and 5 Essay Questions, will test basic working knowledge of the field of interpreting and ethical practices. (It is strongly recommended that the candidates familiarize themselves with the RID Code of Ethics and Code of Professional Conduct before taking the written test. Visit www.rid.org for more information).

2. Interpreting Skills Assessment. This is an expressive test done using a tape with both a hearing and a deaf person on screen. Facilitating the conversation between the hearing and deaf person allows the candidate to demonstrate their ability to move smoothly between signed ASL and spoken English. This is typically evaluated by both a certified interpreter and a deaf person. Please contact us at office@wnydas.org to request for a copy of the Expressive Evaluation Score Sheet for information on the specific skills evaluated.

You must also complete an application, providing information on how to contact you and your relative educational background. After you have completed both parts 1 and 2, you will be offered the opportunity to discuss your results. To make an appointment for assessment, please contact our office email!

We look forward to working with you!
