Request an Interpreter

Request for interpreting services can be made by calling Deaf Adult Services (DAS) at (716) 833-1637, weekdays between 8:30AM and 4:00PM. Whenever possible, requests should be made at least one week in advance of the date of service. Emergency requests are processed through our 24-hour Emergency Interpreting Service (716) 834-3131. The emergency service is available 24-hours a day, seven days a week and should be contacted if the Deaf Adult Services office is closed. For all requests, services cannot be guaranteed, but every effort to locate an interpreter will be made.

When making a request, the following information must be provided:

  • Date
  • Time and approximate length of time an interpreter is needed
  • Location (address, building name, room number etc.)
  • Contact person and telephone number
  • Name of deaf individual(s)
  • Description of assignment
  • Language preference of the deaf person, if known
  • Billing information

The DAS office will fax a confirmation of service arrangements. The requester is responsible for notifying the DAS office with any cancellations or changes to the original request. DAS will not be responsible for the inability to change a request once it has been scheduled, however, every effort will be made to accommodate the change.

Services will be billed as it is rendered. Payment is due upon receipt of the bill. Consumers not satisfied with the services received are encouraged to contact DAS.

The Teri Pordum Special Interpreter Fund is a fund set-up in remembrance of Teri Pordum to assist with interpreting expenses incurred when there is not another individual or entity that is legally liable to cover the cost of the interpreter, leaving the sole responsibility to the deaf person (i.e. weddings, funerals).  The deaf individual or immediate family must contact DAS or fill out a Teri Pordum Special Interpreter Fund Application and submit to Deaf Adult Services.

There is a two-hour minimum charge for each appointment. Additional time is billed at half-hour intervals. The full amount is charged if there is less than two full business days (48-hours) notice of cancellation. Only the first day will be charged in the event of a multiple-day assignment. The full amount will be charged if the interpreter arrives to the assignment and either consumer does not. Requests lasting longer than 90 minutes often require more than one interpreter. DAS staff will inform you if this is necessary. When more than one interpreter is required, charges apply per interpreter. When an assignment requires two interpreters and only one interpreter completes the assignment, the service provided by the single interpreter will be billed the same as if two interpreters completed the assignment. If travel time is necessary, this time will be billed as additional hours. Premium Rate is applied to requests made with less than one full business day’s notice and also to jobs taking place from 11:00pm until 8:00am Monday through Friday, Holidays, Saturdays and Sundays.
