Buffalo, NY - Wednesday, May 17, 2017 - Buffalo Niagara Deaf Events LLC is proud to present the 1st Annual World Refugee Day Food Truck Rodeo, sponsored by Deaf Access Services (DAS) and Jewish Family Service (JFS). A portion of food sales will benefit the Deaf Refugee Program offered through Deaf Access Services and Jewish Family Service. This is a family friendly event, open to the public and free admission.
World Refugee Day, observed by the United Nations on June 20th of each year, is dedicated to raising awareness of the situation of refugees throughout the world. In Buffalo there are several other events to commemorate this important day but this event is specifically designed to support the needs of Deaf refugees in Buffalo NY who are in need of specialized language instruction and social supports.
Executive Director of DAS, Pam Kefi said "For many years, Deaf Access Services has been developing a comprehensive program to support Deaf refugees in Buffalo. It wasn’t until we started our collaboration with Jewish Family Service, Refugee Resettlement Program that we are really seeing this project take off. Together, we now assist over 18 new arrival refugees from countries such as Somalia, Sudan, Congo, Syria, Nepal and Burma. It is critical for any Deaf refugee program to be successful for Deaf agencies and resettlement agencies to tackle the educational and acculturation needs together. Our partnership is fortunate to have the support of Buffalo Niagara Deaf Events LLC in putting together this unique Food Truck Rodeo in recognition of World Refugee Day and in support of our Deaf Refugee Program."
